Facts Do Matter

It's too bad when "facts" fall victim to "winning at any cost".

That seems to be what happened at the RNC.  Facts, not Obama took a beating at the RNC.  Check out what happened to the facts at the RNC.

Let's do it again.....re-elect President Obama on November 6.

Ryan's Five Lies at RNC

Ryan's five lies

"Mainstream media: Fact-check and call out candidates when they lie. You have an obligation as journalists to educate the public on the facts of the major campaign issues."

Sign the Petition!
Last night, Paul Ryan lied to the American people. Some journalists and outlets covered Ryan's lies. But others failed to check the facts and didn't call Ryan out on his brazen lies.
In this crucial election, news reporters have an obligation to educate the public about the facts regarding the major issues and call out the candidates every time they lie.
That's why I created a petition urging the major news corporations—ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, FOX, and MSNBC—to live up to their obligation to report the truth. The petition says: Mainstream media: Fact-check and call out candidates when they lie. You have an obligation as journalists to educate the public on the facts of the major campaign issues.
Here is a list of five lies that Paul Ryan told when he gave his speech at the Republican National Convention last night. Every single news outlet should report on these lies.
1. Lie: President Obama is the "greatest threat" to Medicare.
Truth: Obama didn't make any cuts to Medicare benefits; he made cuts to provider reimbursements to improve cost efficiency and extend the fiscal security of Medicare by eight years. According to the Medicare actuary, "[Obama's] Affordable Care Act makes important changes to the Medicare program and substantially improves its financial outlook."1
But Ryan actually does want to cut benefits. He proposed dismantling Medicare and replacing it with a voucher system, leaving millions of seniors to come up with more money to pay for care out of pocket.2,3
2. Lie: President Obama didn't save a General Motors plant in Wisconsin.
Truth: First, Obama wasn't even in office when the GM plant closed. Second, Obama never made a promise to save it.4
3. Lie: President Obama ignored recommendations of a bipartisan debt commission.
Truth: Paul Ryan actually sat on that commission. And he led Republicans in voting down the commission's own recommendation. So the commission never gave a report to Obama, because Ryan himself voted to kill the report before it could.5
4. Lie: President Obama is responsible for the downgrading of the U.S. Credit Rating.
Truth: House Republicans, including Paul Ryan, held the full faith and credit of the United States hostage to try to ransom it for trillions of dollars in cuts to social programs without increasing taxes on the wealthy one dime. Standard & Poor's said specifically, "We have changed our assumption on [revenue] because the majority of Republicans in Congress continue to resist any measure that would raise revenues." That's why our nation's credit rating was downgraded.6,7
5. Lie: Ryan wants to protect the "weak."
Truth: Ryan's biggest feat in his political career was proposing a budget with dramatic cuts to programs benefiting the poor. He'd cut Medicaid by one third, take away health care insurance from 30 million Americans, and cut Pell Grants for 1 million students. All so that he could give more tax breaks to the rich.8
Thanks!

RNC You Didn't Build That

By Carl Gibson, Reader Supported News

25 August 12

Reader Supported News | Perspective

he entire theme of the upcoming Republican National Convention in Tampa is "We Built This."

It's a dig at a remark Obama made at a Virginia campaign event, where he pushed the narrative that government investments in national infrastructure like good schools, good roads and good police/fire protection is essential to the success of the business community. Naturally, the GOP

took a few words out of Obama's speech and sold it to a media eager to paint the president as anti-business, even though the stock market is near an all-time high and corporate profits are already at all-time highs.

At a nauseating campaign rally last week dubbed a "town hall meeting" in Manchester, New Hampshire, which turned away Democrats with tickets to the event, both candidates relentlessly harped on Obama's "you didn't build that" remark. The meticulously-scripted event only took questions from fawning supporters, one of whom was a small business owner who also reveled in the GOP's new favorite anti-Obama meme. Paul Ryan's twitter is full of such tired platitudes like: "I'm proud to stand with @MittRomney - a leader who knows that if you have a small business, you did build that!"

Ironically, the Tampa Bay Times Forum arena, the location the Republican Party chose to host a convention with the "We Built This" theme, was built with taxpayer funds, which accounted for $86 million, or 62%, of the total money needed to finance the construction of the stadiumIt's a fitting paradox, as the GOP is expected to nominate a guy for president who made his millions tearing down American businesses and selling them to China, and a vice-presidential pick whose past voting history contradicts nearly every one of his current positions.

Like his party's philosophy, Paul Ryan is a walking contradiction. He didn't become a deficit hawk until Barack Obama was elected. The biggest spending bills during the Bush administration - tax cuts for the top 1%, two unfunded wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the costly Medicare Part D donut hole - all account for most of the current debt for which Ryan, who voted to add $6.8 trillion to the debt, is using to bludgeon Obama. At the August 20 campaign event in New Hampshire, Ryan managed to speak of 1 in 6 Americans living in poverty as "unacceptable" while keeping a straight face, while simultaneously championing a budget plan that would literally cut taxes for people like himself and Romney, while raising taxes on - and cutting paid-for benefits for - people like those in the audience cheering for him. The $4 trillion in cuts proposed in the Ryan budget is offset by the $4 trillion less in revenue that would be collected. Paul Ryan, like his budget, is a complete fraud.

Republicans like Paul Ryan and Eric Cantor blast big government spending in the press, while simultaneously lobbying for it in private. Ryan's district benefited from spending from Obama's Recovery Act, which used $20 million to make homes more energy-efficient.

House Republican Leader Eric Cantor wrote this letter asking for government spending in his own district. Then, once the TV cameras are on, Cantor, Ryan, and the Republicans fall all over themselves to talk about how government doesn't create jobs. And in order to reinforce their false narrative that can't otherwise stand on its own under scrutiny, they fight to get more of themselves elected to office on the premise of "government can't do anything right," and vote down every proposal that would create jobs and improve the economy while saying, "See? We told you government doesn't do anything!"

The Republican Party having their national convention with a "We Built This" theme in a stadium made possible by the government spending they claim to hate is the perfect illustration of how silly today's Republican Party has become. If you're voting Republican in this election and you aren't a millionaire or a corporate lobbyist, you're proving to everyone around that you're just as silly as your politicians.

Voter Suppression Still an Issue in Florida

We're not out of the woods yet in Florida when it comes to actions being taken that can suppress voter turnout in elections.  But some of our elected officials are fighting back.  Voter fraud is a concern in some places in the US, however, some of the steps being taken are more about blocking the vote of duly registered folks than it is weeding out the frauds.  We can't let 'bad practices' slide by under the mask of 'good intentions'.

Richard's Take - A Must Read

If you want a really good sight line on the political race as it's shaping up and a good understanding of how the two main political parties work and what their candidates think and stand for, then check out Richard's Take

You may not agree with his sense of things, but, you'll be enlightened by his commentary for sure!

Richard's Take is refreshing an don point!

Questions?

1) If as of today, 23 million people are out of work and there are only 3.5 million jobs currently available...then does that mean "full employment" is defined as 19.5 million unemployed people?

2)What can the Republicans do beat President Obama's record of 24 straight months of positive job growth in the private sector?

3 - 4) And, if they could do better, how long will it take before they surpass the Obama record and pace of  job growth?  Think about it, should we dumb the current growth record to have it stall out for 24 months or longer, just to reset the clock?

NOT!!!!!

The President Out-foxes Opposition Again!

The latest big win for the President helps college students with their loan debt and provides funds for higway construction jobs for Americans! The Bill is another effort by President Obama to help college students and put people to work across the states in highway construction jobs.

Why then, is it so hard for people to support jobs and education Bills this President presents?  Some elected officials are angry about the plan to keep interest rates on education loans low on students while in school.  Others are mad the transportation part of the Bill didn't have more money set aside for infrastructure work - but it would mean raising gas-related taxes which no one wants to do.  But, many know it is necessary to raise taxes in some areas in order to put Americans back to work on projects the county needs.  And rest assured, if the Bill would not have passed, many would be complaining the President did too little and did not lead.

Well, give the President credit for leading when he does get something passed with this grid-locked Congress.  Congratulations Mr. President on this Bill and The Affordable Health Care Act being sustained by the Supreme Court.  It was the President's knowledge of Constitutional Law that made sure the "Tax Clause" argument was the secondary rational cited in the government brief in defense of the Act.  He knew the opposition would only focus on the first defense stated in the brief - the Commerce Clause - and he was right.  He out-foxed the others AGAIN.  He knew the High Court would review the secondary defense if it found the first one to be insufficient and that's exactly what happened.  A true leader always has a fallback position!  You go Mr. President!

Let's Do it Again - RE-Elect President Obama!

Are We In It To Win It?

Every day we read or hear how tides are turning in the fund-raising arena for President Obama.  Mitt Romney and the Republicans are positioned to out-raise andout-spend President Obama in the run-up to the Fall election.

We Democrats must decide whether or not we are "in it to win it?" To win it - we must fund it and then vote accordingly!  Anything less and the President and other Democrats will loose!

The re-election of President Obama is so much more than re-electing a person.  It's about re-electing the 'most correct' and 'best' set of values, policies and practices needed for our country and our citizens. The 'hope' many Americans felt when the President was elected was magical.  But, it was just a feeling.  It was not a guaranteed formula to bright about the change we all sought.

That 'hope' needed support.  Support form Congress.  Support from corporations.  Support from individual citizens. One man alone could not move the entrenced machinery of Washington DC politics...even with the best of intentions, commitment and focus.  Even the cobbled together 60 votes between Democratic and Independent Senators was rarely sufficient to pass legislation in the first two years of the Administration without 'support' from a few Republicans.  Thus, how could anyone have thought or think "the change" we all sought and seek could actually come to pass if left to one man alone without help?  Especially when the Republican leadership in both chambers of Congress are committed to "stopping" this President.

That very same 'hope' still needs support.  Our support....yours and mine.  Our money and our vote.  Are you in it to win it?  I'm in!

Let's Do It Again. Re-Elect President Obama.

The Right Thing To Do!

This may be a deal breaker for many Obama supporters - but it was/is the right thing to do. I hope more see it as worthy of their support vs. not.

Let's Do It Again - Re-Elect President Obama.
*****************************

Friend --

Today, I was asked a direct question and gave a direct answer:

I believe that same-sex couples should be allowed to marry.

I hope you'll take a moment to watch the conversation, consider it, and weigh in yourself on behalf of marriage equality:

http://my.barackobama.com/Marriage

I've always believed that gay and lesbian Americans should be treated fairly and equally. I was reluctant to use the term marriage because of the very powerful traditions it evokes. And I thought civil union laws that conferred legal rights upon gay and lesbian couples were a solution.

But over the course of several years I've talked to friends and family about this. I've thought about members of my staff in long-term, committed, same-sex relationships who are raising kids together. Through our efforts to end the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy, I've gotten to know some of the gay and lesbian troops who are serving our country with honor and distinction.

What I've come to realize is that for loving, same-sex couples, the denial of marriage equality means that, in their eyes and the eyes of their children, they are still considered less than full citizens.

Even at my own dinner table, when I look at Sasha and Malia, who have friends whose parents are same-sex couples, I know it wouldn't dawn on them that their friends' parents should be treated differently.

So I decided it was time to affirm my personal belief that same-sex couples should be allowed to marry.

I respect the beliefs of others, and the right of religious institutions to act in accordance with their own doctrines. But I believe that in the eyes of the law, all Americans should be treated equally. And where states enact same-sex marriage, no federal act should invalidate them.

If you agree, you can stand up with me here.

Thank you,

Barack

Let's get it done.....re-elect Presdent Obama!
Obama - Biden
Friend --

Last November, we launched a new calendar to keep supporters like you in the loop about important campaign events and milestones.

Six months later, a lot of pages have peeled off that calendar, we've made a lot of progress -- and we're just getting warmed up.

As we head into the last six months before Election Day, there are important dates and events coming up that you should know about, and we're rolling out new features and improved content. You can sync it to your Google or Outlook account to keep it handy -- so download the new calendar now.

These next six months will bring new challenges and opportunities for this campaign. And with an organization built by thousands of grassroots supporters organizing in local communities, it's important we're all on the same page. The updated calendar will bring you the latest info. Here are just a few of the new features we've added:

-- Updated voter registration and early voting deadlines and reminders, so you can be sure not to miss out
-- New milestones and accomplishments from the campaign and the last three years
-- Events, volunteer opportunities, and program launches in states across the country
-- A brand new video

Beyond the nitty-gritty details, the calendar will continue to highlight the big picture -- where our organizing stands overall, where we are in the campaign, and how all our work ties into the larger whole.

We're building on our foundation, forming new neighborhood teams and opening new offices. With the general election effectively underway, we're ramping up our outreach efforts to make sure we keep growing. To win in November, it's going to take all of us working together.

Download the calendar today, and don't miss a beat of the campaign's last six months:

Stay Informed!

The other day when President Obama took the stage in Columbus, we didn't just see an excellent speech.

We saw why he's running for a second term. And why we need to keep him in the White House.

Because, as the President laid out, this election comes down to who will leave our country better and stronger four years from now. And the choice couldn't be clearer.
You really should watch the President's speech:

Video: President Obama in Ohio

There's a lot to do in the next six months. The outcome will affect us for decades to come.
**************
Did you see this one? Well, check it out!
Also, this morning on the "political talk shows" I heard that Obama is slightly ahead of Romney in the swing state of VA. That's probably the way it is in many swing states at this early date. What needs to happen is for all of us who want to keep the Presidency in Democratic hands this Fall, to redouble our personal efforts to help elect or re-elect Democrats all across this country - especially governorships.
I also received a letter from Democratic strategist, Jim Carville.  In it he said Republicans controlled 29 governorships after the 2010 elections. Since then tons of legislation has been introduced to do every thing from weaken Union worker rights (Ohio & Wisconsin), erase a woman's right to choose (Oklahoma & Virginal), voting rights (Florida) to rolling back education progress (Pennsylvania & New Jersey).
At any rate, we must get busy to elect Democrats every chance we get.  We must give money whenever we can as well. I hope you will!

Check Your Voter Registration Status

For your information from the DCDEC
Voting is important.  Make sure there are no problems with your voter registration status.
Let's Do It Again - Re-Elect President Obama

Visit our new online hub to check your voter registration status and learn how to register if you need to.

Here in Florida, voter registration is absolutely critical. Every four years, our state plays a huge role in determining the winner of the presidential election -- and this year will be no exception.

It's on all of us to make sure we're ready to vote on November 6th -- and that starts with getting registered or updating your registration status if you've moved.

The more Floridians who vote, the better our chances of giving President Obama four more years in office and winning other crucial elections in the state. So unless you're content with sitting back and watching the other side's candidates roll back all our progress, step up and take action to help protect what we've accomplished so far.

Take a moment to check your voter registration status -- then nudge your friends and family to do the same:

Let The Campaign Begin!

Let's Do It Again - Re-Elect President Obama!

We can make it happen if we commit ourselves to voting, registering others to vote and making a contribution(s) - at whatever level - to the campaign!

Obama - Biden
Friend --

Big news: In 10 days, President Obama is hitting the campaign trail.

On Saturday, May 5th, the President and First Lady Michelle Obama are holding the first two public rallies of the campaign in Columbus, Ohio, and Richmond, Virginia. He'll speak about how far we've come, and lay out the very real stakes in this election: Are we going to continue to move forward, rebuilding an economy that's meant to last, with a growing middle class and more Americans getting a fair shot? Or are we going to go back to the same failed policies that crashed our economy and left too many folks struggling to catch up? That's the choice.

These kinds of events are one of the hallmarks of this organization. Millions of people first came to know and support candidate Barack Obama in 2007 and 2008 when they met him at rallies and town halls in their communities. We're now entering the general election of his final campaign -- this day should be something pretty special.

The President would like two supporters from across the country and their guests to meet him backstage before he goes on at the first rally. Supporters like you are the core of this campaign -- so we're opening this up to anyone willing to sign up.

Right now, by signing up to receive important campaign updates on your phone, you will be automatically entered to join the President backstage.

What we're looking at right now is essentially the start of a general election. We've all but got our opponent. This is what we've been building for since we launched this campaign last April -- and we're ready to go.

I can tell you the President can't wait to get out there.

You really can't lose on this one: As part of our mobile community, you'll be sure to hear about events near you, when the President will be in your area, and other campaign news.

And signing up right now just might land you the chance to meet President Obama backstage before he starts firing folks up.

Want to be there with him? Sign up for text updates -- and be automatically entered for you and a guest to meet him backstage:

P.S. -- Even if you can't be there, you'll still be able see the first rally for yourself. We'll be streaming the event live on our site. Stay tuned for more information about that.

Republicans and the RNC Want Blacks - Really?

Republicans want to increase Black membership?  Really?  If this were true, the RNC and Party leaders in the US Congress, Governorships and State Legislatures around the country would not have a long history of fighting against many laws that were initiated to assist Blacks, women, Hispanics and the working poor.  Whether it's Voting Rights, Civil Rights (equal opportunity laws not hand outs), a woman's right to choose, collective bargaining (helps a lot of workers of color), FCC rules to aid minority ownership of media vehicles, race sensitive scholarships, the Dream ACT, even the very existence of a US Department of Education; Republicans have historically fought against many measures intended to do good for marginalized communities.

Where has their concern been for the last many decades over the unemployment and under-employment rates in the Black community and other communities of color?  The unemployment rate for Blacks has always been higher than Whites and Republicans have been slow to push for meaningful solutions.

What Republicans seek now is a minimal percentage shift of Black voters to their side to tip the scales in their favor.  A minimal shift of Black Christians (especially in Ohio) in the Bush-2 reelcetion bid helped a lot!

Blacks, Hispanics, woman, young voters - all target populatins for both politcal parties should not be fooled by the Republicans' latest attempt to be inclusive.

Bad Laws - Modify or Repeal?

Stand-your-ground-type laws are troubling in many states.  Read what The Leadership Conference Education Fund reports about the one in Alabama and on racial profiling in general.  Stay on top of any similar law in your home state.

There's work to be done to make our country a 'more perfect union'.

Voter Registration is Still a Powerful & Necessary Weapon in Politics

A coalition of several Black church organizations registered 100,000 on Easter Sunday

This new organization called the Empowerment Movement represents nearly 500,000 Black churches from diverse denominations.  Collectively, the Empowerment Movement plans to register 1 million, new voters this election cycle.  That's an average of 20 registrations per congregation.  Although the target population is Black Americans, no one will be turned away from the registration efforts.

The Duval County DEC is working with other Democratic organizations to register new voters in Duval County and NE, FL.  Contact the office to learn more about how you can support the effort. Call 904-390-7001.  You can also lead an effort at your place of worship or social/civic group.

Given our registered voter advantage, if Democrats vote, Democrats win in Duval County and state-wide.  Let's add to our numbers and increase our voter turnout this Fall.

PAC+ to focus on black and latino communities in 2012 election

A new political action committee, PAC+, launched Wednesday to specifically focus on black and Latino communities on behalf of President Obama’s 2012 campaign efforts.

U.S. President Barack Obama. (JASON REED - REUTERS)
PAC+ plans to spend $10 million to organize minority voters around the country. The group is led by the same team that created VoteHope in 2007, the nation’s first Democratic super PAC. PAC+ is targeting six states this year: Georgia, Texas, California, Ohio, New Mexico and Arizona.

Those states are flagged as most important because of three criteria, according to PAC+: They have the most potential to form a multiracial new majority where there is a need for building infrastructure; PAC+ resources, time and money would make a meaningful impact; and the races in those states are worth contesting.

“Currently a handful of billionaires are hijacking our democracy and advancing policies that are harmful to the majority of the American people. PAC+ is piloting a new model of SuperPAC that is focused on many donors, not mega-donors,”Steve Phillips, the chairman of PAC+, said in a press release.

The group is headquartered in Washington, D.C., but is independent of the Obama campaign. PAC+ was launched by more than 70 community and political leaders across 16 states and is powered by PowerPAC.org, the same social justice organization that spent $10 million across 18 states targeting African American and Latino voters for the Obama campaign in 2007. The group also wants to attract voters of color and liberal whites with a yearly household income of more than $100,000.

Phillips is a donor activist who has worked in public office and was founder and chairman of PowerPAC.org.
